6th Grade Job Shadowing

For the tenth consecutive year, we are providing an opportunity for our students to “shadow” a professional at work on Friday, February 5th from 9:00 to 12:00. This is an important opportunity for 6th graders to spend the day exploring different work settings, and it will give students a chance to explore career opportunities that might interest them.

The long list of businesses, professionals and community organizations hosting our 6th graders is impressive! We thank them all. We also appreciate our parent volunteers, Katherine and Genie Robertson, who have organized this valuable event.

Sales Tax Holiday for School Supplies

The 2009 sales tax holiday will begin at 12:01 am, Friday, August 21, and end at midnight, Sunday, August 23.

For the first time, school supplies (under $100) will qualify for a tax exemption. It appears that all the normal school supplies are on the list except for flash drives, baggies and wipes/sanitizer.

As always, most clothing, footwear and backpacks priced under $100 continue to qualify for the exemption.

Mathews Achieves Exemplary Status!

Mathews Elementary has earned Exemplary status in the 2009 TEA Accountability Ratings.

The latest ratings announced by AISD on Friday, July 31st, show that Mathews topped the bar of 90% TAKS passing rate, advancing to Exemplary status, which is the highest rank in the system. Mathews is one of twenty-four schools rated Exemplary in 2009, nine more than in 2008.

Congratulations to all Mathews students, teachers and staff on this outstanding achievement!

Good Times Celebration

Join your neighbors for this celebration of life and community!

Saturday, April 18th, 2:00-5:00 pm.
On West Lynn between 10th and 12th Streets.

Face painting, cookie decorating, Sweet Potato contest, puppy parade, live music and more! (Dogs on leash please.) The MFE and PTA will co-host a “Guitar Hero” booth, thanks to the generosity of adopter Grande Communications, with proceeds to support Mathews Technology classes.

Free entry to the celebration, with donations accepted to benefit the West Austin Park and the Mary Francis Baylor Clarksville Park.

Mathews Fine Arts Festival

Please join us April 23rd, 5:00 – 7:00 pm!

Artwork from all 420 Mathews students will line the halls of the school, the Mathews Band and Orchestra will perform a concert in the gym, and a sale of local artists’ work will support the Mathews art program.

We can still use help to get ready for the show! Please contact Sara Jo Belknap if you have time to assist.

The 6th Grade car wash fundraiser on March 28th was a huge success!

They made $819 and want to thank everyone — parents, students, and teachers — who helped, as well as everyone who came and got their cars washed.

Great Work on Building & Grounds

Many thanks to all our volunteers who helped make our March 28th Building & Grounds Work Day a great success!

We made wonderful improvements in the front playground, worked on Fairy Tale Theater sets, and prepared for the upcoming Fine Arts Festival.

State of Mathews Evening a Success

Parents, students, staff and volunteers gathered on Thursday, March 26th, for the annual State of Mathews event. Parents and staff discussed areas of school improvement, while students explored the arts.
