Family Science Night

Join the fun — December 1st, 2010

Mathews Family Science Night is an extravaganza of science explorations, with community exhibits and class experiments galore. The evening will begin at 5:30 with Mangia Pizza for sale in the cafeteria. Then from 6:00-7:00, science booths will be open throughout the gym, the cafeteria and the blacktop for families to investigate, explore and discover. It’s always a great evening of fun and fellowship. We hope to see you there!

The 2009 event was a rousing success

The Mathews community gathered on Thursday, November 5, 2009, for the annual Family Science Night event. Sixth graders fed us all with delicious pizza. Our PTA co-presidents and treasurer led us in a happy and clear report about Octoberama and the PTA budget. Then the crowd headed into an extravaganza of science explorations, with community exhibits and class experiments galore.

The gym, the cafeteria and the blacktop were filled to the brim with parents, guardians, students and siblings. There was not a display or workstation that stood idle. Children oohed and aahed at the malleable bubbles that two lively representatives of Girlstart created for them. The robots from LASA inspired the engineer in everyone. The City of Austin’s leaky faucet display has made all of our students conscious of the little splashes they hear about their own houses. The Texas Farm Bureau’s rainwater runoff display impressed the children with how our neighborhood environments affect the ground water that runs below. These are only a few of the dynamic displays the community brought out for us.

Tree People gave away trees, Austin Energy electrified our students, REI taught them how to camp, and our own teachers led children in projects and experiments all night long. The geologist, the worm farm, the UT Anthropology department – all contributed to a night of unparalleled exploration, excitement and pleasure. Everyone learned something new, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and Mathews and its outstanding staff, once again, proved this is a unique school bursting at the seams with imagination and determination.
