State of Mathews Evening

Please join us for an important evening to focus on the State of Mathews.

Thursday, March 4th:
This is our yearly opportunity to reflect on our successes and plan for enhancements to the quality of programming for our students.

Mathews is constantly changing, improving, growing and learning. School improvement occurs through meaningful collaboration between school and the community. We need each family to offer their knowledge, time, talents and resources. So please join other parents and staff members to discuss how we can
“Make It Happen” at Mathews.

5:30   Pizza and Sign-up for classes (class size limit 15)
5:45   PTA Meeting (students meet in the gym)
6:00-7:00   Focus Groups for parents & Fine Art activities for students

Focus Groups for parents – you choose which “Make it Happen” group to join:

  • Go Green/Community Service Projects – How can we become a Go Green exemplary campus?
What kinds of community service projects can we undertake each semester?
  • Communications and Public Relations – How can we enhance our website and other means of communication? How do we promote Mathews to the greater Austin community?
  • Building & Grounds – What does our school need in terms of refurbishing and maintenance,
and how can we make sure it gets done?
  • Fundraising for the future – How can we obtain the resources we need to have a cutting edge,
first-class technology program for our children?

Free Fine Arts Classes for students – limit 15 students each class:

Those of you who attended last year spearheaded some great accomplishments: Changes implemented in the school cafeteria menu; improvements to building and grounds and a plan for future improvements; new environmental initiatives implemented this year; reaching out to the downtown community.

Let’s continue the momentum in enhancing the programming at our school. Please join us! We need you to keep our school strong and vibrant.

We’ve created a brief survey, to help you think about how you might participate in keeping Mathews exemplary. In preparation for the meeting on the 28th, please complete the survey at:

Here’s a recap of last year’s event…

face-paint-1Parents, teachers, students and volunteers gathered on Thursday, March 26th, 2009, for the annual State of Mathews evening.

The event took on a new look for the 2009 year, with parents and staff splitting into round-table discussions to voice their thoughts and share their expertise. Six different focus groups generated new and innovative ideas to advance school goals, on topics chosen by our Campus Advisory Council as priorities for the coming year. Here are some snippets of the many creative ideas:

  • Community Service Projects: To provide opportunities for our children to regularly participate in community service projects, connect the projects to learning. i.e., 4th Grade studies Texas, so they could visit the state cemetery and participate in a clean-up.
  • Public Relations: Reaching out to neighborhood families who are not currently attending Mathews, with the brand message, “Think globally. School locally,” and park gatherings.
  • School Safety: Talk to the city about installing raised crosswalks with flashing lights in the roadway; always have an adult in front of the school at drop-off time.
  • Healthy Cafeteria Meals: Use more fresh vegetables; serve a vegan or veggie burger; post nutritional info on Mathews360.com.
  • Building and Grounds: This group walked the school and will be coming up with a list of items that will be presented to A.I.S.D.
  • Math: Parents learned about the use of manipulatives and other instructional techniques being used at school.

We value everyone’s input on the journey towards continuous improvement, and truly appreciate the time our parents and staff gave to share their knowledge and ideas!

Exploring the Arts

puppetry-2

While parents brainstormed, our kids were having a blast as they explored the arts. Younger ones did face painting, puppetry, creative movement and an orchestra petting zoo. Older students did improv theater, computer art, steel drumming and hip hop.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this evening a success!
