STEAM – Science Technology Engineering Art Math
Our school embraces creative learning opportunities while using 21st century technology, woven into the day-to-day curriculum. Our teachers are dedicated to working with online tools in their daily instruction, creating hands-on learning opportunities for all. Some of our teachers are trained through Coding4TX to bring Scratch coding for all in the classroom.
Each student, grades preK through 6th, visit the Innovation Lab at least once a week, where they receive online tools and online safety instruction, keyboarding lessons, have access to Chromebooks and iPads to do project research, learn coding through Scratch Jr (preK-2nd grade), Scratch MIT (2nd grade and up), explore with MakeyMakey and Ozobots. In the Spring of 2016, Mathews Elementary received a grant from Austin Ed Fund to purchase a LittleBits wall. We also recently acquired a 3D printer (Lulzbot Mini) and all grades are learning to use Tinkercad. Starting Fall 2017, thanks to an initiative of the Austin ISD Early Childhood department, our PreK students will be learning code with Cubetto.
Each year, the campus celebrates S.T.E.A.M. through Maker projects, school-wide Engineering days, after-school programs, school-wide literacy project – In 2016/17, all grades read and studied ‘The Wild Robot‘ by Peter Brown and collaborated on derived STEAM projects.
We partner with the wonderful Makers at MakerReady who built our Maker tool carts and regularly come in for teacher professional development and Family Build Nights. Students learn not only to use electronic technology, but are also exposed to good ol’ tools, sewing machines, hand saws, hot glue guns, etc… The school is committed to high tech AND low tech: we reuse and up-cycle common house hold items which become amazing building materials.
