STEAM AT MATHEWS

Science Technology Engineering Arts Math

Our school embraces creative learning opportunities while using 21st century technology woven into the day-to-day curriculum. Our teachers are dedicated to working with online tools in their daily instruction, creating hands-on learning opportunities for all.

Each grade, grades Pre-K through 6th, visit the Innovation Lab at least once a week and:

  • Receive online tools and online safety instruction,

  • Receive keyboarding lessons,

  • Learn coding through either Scratch JR (PK-2nd) or Scratch MIT (2nd-6th),

  • Explore with MakeyMakey and Ozobots.

In the Spring of 2016, Mathews Elementary received a grant from Austin Ed Fund to purchase  a LittleBits wall. We also recently acquired a 3-D printer (Lulzbot Mini) to teach students about 3-D design.

Since Fall 2017, thanks to an initiative of the Austin ISD Early Childhood department, our Pre-K students are learning code with Cubetto.

Each year, the campus celebrates STEAM through Maker projects, school-wide engineering days, school-wide literacy projects, etc.

We partner with the wonderful Makers at MakerReady, who built our Maker tool carts. Students learn not only how to use electronic technology, but are also exposed to good ol' tools like sewing machines, hand saws, hot glue guns, etc. The school is committed to high-tech and low-tech. We reuse and up-cycle common household items, which become amazing building materials.
