Mathews students meet Superintendent Carstarphen, highlight safe school routes

Post by Jennifer Binford, PTA Co-President

Mathews students helped bring attention to safe walking and biking habits as part of AISD’s Back-to-School Bash at the Austin Convention Center on August 24.

Former Austin Independent School District, Dr. Meria Carstarphen meets with Mathews students.
Former Austin Independent School District, Dr. Meria Carstarphen meets with Mathews students.

The district held a press conference at the event to stress the importance of safe routes to and from schools, and city dignitaries were on hand to encourage drivers to be alert, observe school zone speed limits, and forgo texting when behind the wheel. AISD Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen spoke about the need for parents, children, and drivers to be watchful and cautious as schools open their doors this fall.

AISD invited Mathews students to help demonstrate school route safety by making use of a staged crosswalk at the press conference. Sixth grader Ben Baskin donned an orange vest and allowed the “pedestrians” (Judge Baskin, Julia Klima, Ben Appel, and Sarah Appel) to cross in safety. The children also participated in a feltboard exercise illustrating safe biking and walking practices.

Austin City Council member Laura Morrison, AISD Police Chief Eric Mendez, and AISD Board Trustee Amber Elenz were also in attendance.
