We Educate the World!

Mathews Elementary is an award-winning, small, downtown school with an outstanding staff, and the most diverse elementary student body in Austin, Texas. Our mission is to educate children with positive attitudes, academic foundations, and a lifelong love of learning. We educate the world!

mathews_43The attendance borders of Mathews include the Texas State Capitol, the Texas State Cemetery, Austin City Hall, the central administration building of the Austin Independent School District, and the northern side of the hike/bike trails of Lady Bird Lake. This 95-year-old school is the best-kept secret in downtown Austin!

Our 400 students—from preK to 6th grade—represent over 40 countries, 20 languages, and include families from all walks of life. Approximately one-third of our students are transfer students: families go out of their way to have their children attend Mathews. Another third of our students are children of graduate students from the University of Texas at Austin. More than half of Mathews’ students come from economically disadvantaged homes, and ten percent are classified as homeless.

Mathews serves our broad social, economic, racial, linguistic, and cultural mixture with Bilingual and ESL programs in Spanish, Korean, and Chinese. The special nature of the Mathews student body has attracted a highly committed group of teachers and staff, dedicated to the highest quality education for all students. Through the great efforts of this talented staff and our motivated students, Mathews has been named an Exemplary school by the Texas Education Agency. Congratulations to all students and staff on this outstanding achievement!
